Garnet/ruby farge, delikat lys rød med transparent kant. Lukter litt brett og promp, fragrant og snev av svisker. Uenighet om kvalitet på denne. Synes den burgunderske stilen til produsenten er veldig bra. Men dette var nok ikke en helt optimal flaske. 87 poeng

Barolo Bricco Boschi 2001, Cavallotto

Mørk vin med tørrende finish. Rustikk, solid og tøff i strukturen. Men ultraklassisk nebbe, trenger en kjøttbit. Mye flaskevariasjon på parti 2001 som kom til Norge, men denne var bra. 91-94 poeng

Barolo Vigna Rionda 2004, Roagna

Klassisk og tøff strukturert Vigna Rionda. Mørke kirsebær, tørrende med god energi. Litt grønn og kantete Serralungafrukt. 92 poeng

Fruktig og dyp med overraskende my eik i nese og munn. Jordbær, elegant og genuin. Kirsebærstein og Are var rask på Serralunga.  Tøff struktur og vinen kan fortsatt lagres. 92 poeng

Barolo Pie Rupestris 2001, Cappellano

Moden matt farge med blomster, syltede jordbær og kald te. Overraskende moden og tilgjengelig; dette er essensen av moden nebbe. Salt note, innslag av lakris og nyper. Finkornet og fragrant. Den beste vinen i rekka. 94 poeng

Barolo Vigna Rionda Riserva 2004, Anselma

Utviklet vin, røff i kanten. Mørk, tørr og maskulin. Utviklet tertiær med roser og nype. Rustikk som ofte Anselma er. Mangler litt nyanser. 90 poeng

Giacomo Anselma Barolo Vigna Rionda 2004. Etter 6 timer åpen. Tjæralin, skogsbunn, lysbrent kaffe, kirsebær - ganske mørk og kompakt på nese. Noe krydder, nesten Vosne-aktig. I munnen mye det samme, men markant lakrisrot. Tørr lakris uten sødme. Markante tanniner. Men frukten er bare nydelig nå. Jeg frykter egentlig at denne kan tørke inn med mer lagring, og er jo nydelig nå. 92-93p—

Utviklet vin med intakt solid fruktkjerne. Klassisk stil med tjære, nype og tjærebåt. Jordaktig, maskulin, høstløv og nydelig vin. 93 poeng

Lysere farge enn 2004. Lik stil som 04 i munnen, litt mere moden. Vanskelig å skille de fra hverandre mht. kvalitet. Litt mere fragrant og utviklet enn 04. 93 poeng.

1999 Barolo: Brilliance, Intensity and Class

A light snow fell as I drove up the winding hillsides of La Morra on a dark, shrouded evening in March 2003. I had never seen snow at that time of the year in Piedmont, but fortunately it wasn't too bad. A business trip in Genoa that week provided a good excuse to escape to La Morra for the night. I was more than happy to make the two and half hour commute each way just to spend some time in these magical hillsides.

Elio Altare's Insieme group was putting on a tasting of the 1999 Barolos at the Cantina Comunale in the center of town. I had already tasted many of the wines on previous trips, but this was my first large tasting of the 1999s. As I walked from table to table I was blown away by what I tasted. The 1999 Barolos were simply stunning. I just loved the energy and tension of what I sampled. The wines were so alive. I knew right then that 1999 was going to be a great vintage for Barolo.

As the months passed, very little was said or written about the 1999 vintage in Barolo or Piedmont. All the attention was on the 2000s. I had tasted plenty of those wines too, and they were gorgeous, especially from barrel. No doubt about it. But the 1999s had something more. More power, intensity, structure, and, most important of all, a quality I have always been taught to seek in Nebbiolo; namely the ability of a wine to convey something about where it is from.

The next year, I started Piedmont Report, largely inspired by the 1999 Barolos, and my steadfast belief that there was space for another voice on Italian wines in light of how much this vintage was either overlooked or lumped in with Barbaresco and the rest of Piedmont. It was clear the 1999 Barolos were fabulous and quite different in both personality and quality than the 1999 Barbarescos. Issue 7 of Piedmont Report, published in May 2006, featured a comprehensive look at the wines.

Fast forward to today. The 1999s are just as magnificent as they were at the outset. A warm spring led to a growing season of mostly balanced weather and a normal to slightly late harvest. Barolo was not hit with the hail that was so troublesome in Barbaresco, which is one of the main reasons 1999 is a much more consistently outstanding vintage in Barolo.

As a group, the 1999 Barolos are not as austere as the 1996s, the closest vintage in style in the 1990s. Although powerful and structured, the 1999s have begun to soften and are now drinking beautifully. A few wines need a little more bottle age, but they are in the distinct minority. Of course, the best examples will continue to develop in bottle for years to come. Readers who bought the 1999s upon release or shortly thereafter are going to be thrilled. There can be little doubt today that 1999 is a magnificent Barolo vintage.

Tydelig og erketypisk nebbe med ubønnhørlig syrlig Serralungafrukt. Mørk, begynnende modning mot lettere toner av jordbær og en kledelig sødme. Drikker godt nå. 93 poeng.

Jeg blir ofte imponert av 99 årgangens syrenivå og friskhet, men begynner den nå å vise svakhetstegn ? Har mistet litt spenst og saftighet. Denne virker moden og har et lite snev av slapphet. Mangler energien som jeg forbinder med årgangen. Kan og bør drikkes framover. Ikke sikker på om dette var en optimal flaske. 91 poeng

Barbaresco Chrichêt Pajè 1999, Roagna
Tørr, karakterfull nebbe, mineralsk og saltaktig med en fremdeles tøff struktur. Tørrer litt i finish og bør drikkes. 94 poeng.

Chianti Classico Riserva Monsanto 1999,  Il Poggio
Melkaktig frukt, fremstår med mer bløt frukt enn de andre i rekka. Tilgjengelig og snill. 90 poeng

Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto 2004, Bruno Giacosa
Mørk og varm frukt. Intens og ungdommelig. Rypeblod og nesten syrah-aktig i sin konsentrasjon. Solmoden, "blå" frukt. Flere var på Aglianico, Grenache, Priorat og Amarone ! Øistein var på nebbe..
Furunål, grønt og bør lagres. En veldig vanskelig Bruno vin og egentlig ikke veldig representabel for hans stil. 92 poeng.

99+ points Robert Parker: "The 2004 Barolo Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto is off the charts. Sweet roses, menthol, tar, licorice and minerals come together in a sensual, elegant style that recalls Giacosa’s legendary 1989 Riserva Collina Rionda, a wine many observers (this one included) place at the top of the hierarchy of all-time legendary Barolos. Ripe, sensual, and utterly spellbinding, the 2004 Riserva Le Rocche del Falletto offers superb elegance and pedigree. At this stage the wine remains surprisingly accessible. Readers will want to taste the 2004 Rocche as soon as possible as it will almost certainly head for a long period of dormancy in the near future. This magical Barolo will likely merit a perfect score in the future. The 2004 Rocche is the last wine Giacosa and former longtime oenologist Dante Scaglione produced together from start to finish and it is an appropriate bookend to a wonderful partnership that yielded so many profound wines. Røkt skinke på nesa, elegant nese med nype og tjære. Moden vin med en deilig utviklet munnfølelse Bål, få gjenværende tanniner og bør drikkes. 92 poeng

Cola frge, litt anonym på nesa, snev av furunål og ingen typisk nebbiolo. Medium utviklet, kan fortsatt lagres. Brunello ? Litt skuffende, disse flaskene er blitt veldig dyre. 90 poeng.

Mørk, moden, ost, kaffe, paprika, østside ? God lengde. Megaårgang. 92 poeng.

Brunello di Montalcino Pian dell Orino 2008
Overraskende lys farge, kraftig vin, brunello-toskansk, mangler endel eleganse, for "broody" og eikete. For mye Parkerized. Men mye vin. 89 poeng

Mørk, mokka, kaffe, rik, myk og moden. Syrerik, klassisk vestside, gode tanniner, tørrer korrekt i finish. Nærmer seg optimalt drikketidspunkt ? 95 poeng

Elegant rødbærsfrukt, fantastisk nese, solbær, sedertre, syrlig, holder seg godt. En veldig god kombo av årgangens fasthet og distriktets eleganse. 90 poeng.

Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 1983, Margaret River
Reduktive søte samtidig bitre bær. Varm stil med mye alkohol. Men frukten holder seg bra. Uelegant som bare australsk vin kan være. 86 poeng

Barbaresco Bernardotti 1978, Guiseppe Mascarello
Ruby briljant farge med en overraskende mørk kjerne. Skuffende buljong og champignon på nesa som heldigvis blir borte etterhvert i glasset. En renere rødbærsfrukt kommer fram med klassiske toner av skogsbunn og varmsmørt tjære på gammelt treverk. Etterhvert en mer kompleks nese med hummus, soyasaus og modne bær. Utvikler seg til en stor vin ! For en utvikling i glasset ! Årgangen holder seg fremdeles godt. Vinmarken ble kjøpt av Ceretto i 1997 og tappes nå under vinmarksnavnet "Bernardot".  93-96 poeng

Barbaresco Sorì Tilden 1981, Gaja
Mørk og typisk farge for produsenten.Tørket frukt, nedfallsløv i en intens og pen nese. Dyp frukt for en mellomårgang dette. Stor nese, semi-kompleks munnfølelse, røykbål og god syrestruktur. Litt volatil finish, og endimensjonal i ettersmak. Men en veldig god vin for årgangen. 92 poeng

Gaja sier dette om årgangen; in 1981, we vinified only 25% of the crop. I remember that we started the harvest at the end of October and by November 3rd we had snow that completely covered the vineyard. We had to wait nine to ten days for the snow to melt. But the grapes were not ripe. Harvest was over by November 15 or 17. But it was so late

Barbaresco Crichet Paje 1978, Roagna
Dette er en av mine favorittviner og 1999 er helt legendarisk. Men denne var dessverre korket og oksidert med søppel og råtne blåskjell og "you name it" ! Liver er urettferdig ...

The name Crichet Pajé comes from the Piemontese dialect. When the Italian State was created, each parcel of land was given an official name.The word Crichet is translated as “top of the small hill”. This is our ultimate location for the cultivation of Nebbiolo. The Nebbiolo grape performs best when it is well exposed as well as sheltered from the strongest winds from the tallest hills; Pajé term refers to the vineyard location.Crichet Pajé is a micro parcel located within the same area, which is particularly rich in white calcareous soil and has our highest content of active limestone. The Paje vineyard is 0.5 Hectare (1.24 Acres) with a unique microclimate and soil which enjoys a view over the Tanaro river valley. The exposition mitigates the cold winters and hot summers. The vineyard is located in the center of the Pajé designated area with additional area facing Southwest.The youngest vines used for this wine are more than 60 years-old with all vines regenerated by using clippings from other vines exclusively located within the same area.In fact, some of the vines have been propagated by using ungrafted vines. The older vines have reached a balance of optimum production even though some plants produce only a single cluster during some years.This wine is born from the experience over many years by Giovanni Roagna. After purchasing the vineyard in 1953, Giovanni spent many years of experimentation in order to seletec this unique terroir. Over the years this wine was aged for as long as it needed in orer to reach maturity and the wine was saved for the family as well as used for important events. In 1978, Alfredo Roagna decided to present Crichet Pajé to the marketplace for the first time. Crichet Pajé requires long aging in large oak barrels and is introduced to the marketplace approximately 10 years after being harvested. Our family believes this is the ultimate expression of our cellar because we value highly complexity and longevity in our wine. We harvest the nebbiolo fruit manually using small crates during the month of Octoberand usually in the morning, once the fruit is perfectly ripe. We make two passes in the vineyard to select the fruit and ensure its’ integrity. Fermentation takes place for ten days and we use exclusively large wood casks thanks to our pied de cute with our indigenous yeasts. We then follow the ancient technique of maceration by splinting the submerged cap which can last for two and a half months (80-90 days).The wine is then aged in neutral oak barrels. The production of bottles is extremely small, in some years we produce fewer than one-thousand bottles. The maximum production is just over two-thousand bottles.

Klassisk bordeaux på nesa med kaffe, mokka og cassis. Mørk kjerne med ruby/vandig kant. Sedertre med hult mellomparti og litt tam konsentrasjon. Samler seg i "nedslaget" og blir bredere i munnen. God balanse, fresh i munnen, men noe endimensjonal for en høyere poengsum. 93 poeng.

Barbaresco 1978, Albino Rocca
Klassisk, ruby-granatrød, blank i konsistensen med nype, skogsbunn og våt ullsokk. Lett volatil, utviklet, bra syre, elegant stil og en smule nervøs. Men årgangen  hjelper den nok litt. 91 poeng.

Angelo Rocca døde i en flystyrt i 2012. Vi møtte en av døtrene Daniela på restauranten !

Barolo Otin Fiorin Pie Franco 2005, Cappellano
Kirsebær, briljant rød, energisk og ren. Gode og solide tanniner. En klassisk og ren nebbenese. Floral, fioler og sursøt. En tilgjengelig årgang, men kan fremdeles ligge. 93 poeng.


Igjen hvit trøffel på alle rettene; også på pannacotta`en !

Enkel rødbærsfrukt, floral, medium mørk, ren & pen frukt. Mangler litt stuffing og trøkk. Dyp pen sangiovesetypisk. Klassisk 2004 stil fra en god produsent. 90-92 poeng.

Barolo Vigna Rionda 2004, Roagna
Fruktig og dyp med overraskende my eik i nese og munn. Jordbær, elegant og genuin. Kirsebærstein og Are var rask på Serralunga.  Tøff struktur og vinen kan fortsatt lagres. 92 poeng.

Valpolicella 2004, Quintarelli
Varm amarone i munnen men bra kompenserende friskhet. Solbær, urter og kaffe. Men den tørkede druesmaken drar ned. 88-90 poeng.

Taurasi Radici 2001, Mastroberardino
Tørker ut i munnen, hul og tørr munnfølelse. Krevende vin. Sigar, uharmonisk og aromatisk. Nerello Mascalese ? Men vinen tror jeg er kjørt evnt. er det en dårlig flaske. 87 poeng.
