The Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses is one of the most prominent wines from this refined and sensual vineyard.
Many argue that it should be elevated to Grand Cru – I beg to differ – taste the Vogüé Musigny and Les Amoureuses side by side … and the case is closed … Les Amoureuses does not possess the layered power and depth of the Grand Cru.
Les Amoureuses does however have a delicacy and sensuality not found in the Musigny – a refined female side offering some of the most filigree details of the Chambolle appellation. I adore Les Amoureuses for what it is – the perhaps most delicate wine of Burgundy.
Les Amoureuses is located just below and north of Les Musigny and is a 5.4 ha vineyard – see map below.
The vineyard is divided into four sections – the southern upper section – where the top end producers like Vogüé, Roumier, Mugnier and Bertheau have the main part of their holdings – (1) on the map. The second is located above the road and just north of the Musigny vineyard (2). Then we have the northern part of the vineyard – closer to Chambolle (3), and lastly there is the lower part of the vineyard (4) – as it continues down towards the village of Vougeot.
There are according to my research 13 or 14 owners of Les Amoureuses currently although some of the owners sell grapes or lease the vineyards to other producers.
The Vogüé plots are located in two sections – the southern section of Amoureuses (3) and then a more northern plot located in the upper part of the lower section of Les Amoureuses – see map below.
The owners see above
Vogüé have two plots in the upper southern part of Les Amoureuses, on the edge towards Vougeot, We have AM 179 covering 0.4755 ha and next to this plot AM 204 covering 0.0515 ha. In the middle/northern part we find the additional plot – AM 193 – a 0.0337 ha plot.
In total 0.5607 ha of Amoureuses – with clearly the bigger part located in the southern end – just below Musigny – see map below.
The geology in the top of Les Amoureuses resembles the geology of Musigny, the soil does however shift as the vineyard starts to decent steeply towards the village of Vougeot.
The soil in the upper part of Les Amoureuses is Calcaire Comblanchien (Comblanchien limestone) just as most of the Musigny vineyard. The lower part is however Marnes a Ostrea Acuminata (white marl with fossilised oysters) the same type of soil found in the upper part of Bonnes Mares.
While the soil in the top part of Les Amoureuses resembles that of Musigny, the top soil is more shallow in Les Amoureuses than in the lower parts of Les Musigny – and the wine is therefore a lighter wine with less power and body than the Musigny made just above the Les Amoureuses vineyard.
The main part of the Vogüé Les Amoureuses is on Calcaire Comblanchien (Comblanchien limestone) soil, and this is clearly also the expression of the wine – in my view one of the purest expression of this soil.
The Les Amoureuses is a wine of quite some variation, as the expression of the vintage is very clear and distinct. The minerality and backbone does however remain – while the weight and depth is a function of the vintage … some medium others more weighty.
