2004 Toscana & 2004 rød Bordeaux

Årgangen 2004 var en vellykket årgang for både rød Bordeaux og for sangiovese/cabernet i Toscana. Kanskje noe mer vellykket i Toscana, med en "indian summer" innhøsting i en rik og balansert stil. 2004 er en klassisk årgang i Bordeaux, vellykket for både hvit og rød. De røde kan nå være rustikke, mangle en del lagringskraft og dybde, men mht. prisnivå anses de som den siste moderate prisede årgang i rød Bordeaux.

Mørk og rik vin og en virkelig solid og god flaske. Grønne raspende tanniner og kan fortsatt lagres. Like god som 1ste vinen og vel så det ! 92 poeng.

Mørk og kraftfull vin. Vinen fremstår i ubalanse med mye alkohol, mye nye fat og mye eik. Gammeldags Parkervin som er gått litt av mote.  Men noen liker fremdeles slike viner. 90-92 poeng

2004 Ornellaia, Tenuta dell’Ornellaia. Intens nese med rød søte bærfrukter, mest kirsebær, lær og tjære. Et svakt alkoholstikk kjennes. Meget konsentrert og smaksrikt anslag i munnen med behagelig syre. Smaksbildet domineres av kirsebær, lakris, noe lær og tjære. Fremdeles temmelig primær i smaksbildet, men tanninene er myke som gjør vinen meget tilgjengelig. Meget lang og fruktig ettersmak. I munnen følger den ikke helt opp synes jeg , da dette blir for «plumpt», for lite presist, og overdrevent rundt og mangel på spenst . Jeg lot meg fascinere veldig av denne stilen for rundt 20 år siden, og anmeldelsene av den tyder på jeg ikke er alene. Med høye forventninger blir dette noe ufullstendig. Jeg er uenig i kritikerne som gir denne opp mot 97p. Når det sagt, er vinen god og mange vil like den. Den gikk helt fint til lammecarré med fløtegratinerte poteter . Til en pris på mer enn 2000kr idag finnes det mange meget bedre kjøp. 93-94p

Chianti Rufina Riserva Vigneto Bucerchiale 2004, Selvapiana

Utviklet Bucerchiale med en frisk og yppig frukt. Utrolig mye vin for pengene dette. Lysere i frukten, spenstig og vinen holder seg fremdeles godt. 91 poeng

Flaccianello Della Pieve IGT 2004, Fontodi

Uren, trå i munnen med medium frukt. Litt slitne fat og ikke en optimal flaske. Eller er den bare sliten ? Se notat under. 86 poeng

Terje Dahl NFFW sep2018; 

Fontodi Flaccianello 2004: Lukten har god frukt samt skogbunn, sopp og sedertre. Samtidig er det en ubestemmelig lukt som kan minne om kokte grønnsaker og marihøner som er vanlig i Burgund fra samme årgang. Smaken er fruktig og ganske primær, men også her med generende grønne toner. Vi åpnet en flaske til for å sjekke om dette var flaskefeil. Den var litt friskere og absolutt drikkbar, men hadde de samme negative aromaene. Dette var merkelig siden vinen er vurdert til 96 poeng i både WA og WS. 85 poeng. Er det noen som har tilsvarende erfaring med denne? 

Tignanello IGT 2004, Antinori

Mørk vin. whiff av kaffe, holder seg såvidt. Slank og syrlig og en relativ enkel vin i formatet. Usikker mht. videre lagring. 87-90 poeng 

Chateau Montrose 2004,  St. Estephe

Solid mørk klassisk Montrose i farge. Umoden plomme med en saltaktig tone i smak, litt overraskende lett for en Montrose. Men mutt og endimensjonal, usikker om vinen blir bedre med ytterligere lagring. 90 poeng

Chateau Baron Pichon Longueville 2004,  Pauillac

Syrlig og utviklet i stilen med whiff av salt og sjøbris. Overraskende tertiær og en delikat vin med en sursøt frukt. Usikker på om vinen blir bedre med ytterligere lagring. Men den var i god balanse og viste litt mer personlighet enn Montrose.  91 poeng

Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2004,  St. Julien

Tydelig klassiske solbær, tobakk, helt ren og pen og tydelig at slottet hadde kommet seg over den dårlige perioden på 80-tallet. Synes 2003 Ducru var en strålende vin. En perfekt flaske og en overraskende god og giving Ducru. 92 poeng

Chateau Sociando - Mallet 2004,  Haut Medoc

Utviklet nese med en god friskhet. Mangler litt trøkk, som vel er litt typisk for området. Klarte seg overraskende bra i dette selskapet og den rimeligste vinen i Bordeauxrekka. 92 poeng.

Chateau Sociando-Mallet 2004 - slottet som alltid leverer. Synd det var min siste flaske.

Moden duft med aromaer av blyant, tobakk, mørke bær, varme krydder og støvet gammel kjeller. Middels fylde med flotte pudderaktige tanniner og en silkeaktig mykhet. Smaker av mørke bær. Kjenner ikke særlig til de grønne årgangsnotene. God lengde. Perfekt moden vin som holder noen år til. 89-90p

Charmes Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2012, Domaine Bachelet 

Lilla fin fersk farge. Grønn stilk, opulent og utrykksfull. Årgangen 2004 ble nevnt. Uren i stilen, krass, askebeger, mangler den gode balansen. Bertrand hadde denne som sin favorittvin (95p)! Produsenten lager bedre viner fra 2014. Medtatt av Tom. 89 poeng.

Dn.no; Da Denis Bachelet ble født i Spy i Belgia i 1963, var det lite som tilsa at han skulle bli en av Burgunds mest ikoniske vinprodusenter. Som ung besøkte han besteforeldrenes vingård i Gevrey, og ble tidlig betatt av livet i vinens verden. Allerede som 16-åring visste han at det var vinmaker han skulle bli. Etter tre år på vinskole i Beaune begynte han å jobbe sammen med sine besteforeldre. Og i 1981 overtok han deres vingård etter at bestefaren døde.Da han overtok gården var den på skarve 1,8 hektar, bestående av 0,43 hektar i grand cru marken Charmes-Chambertin, og litt premier cru vinmark i Gevrey. Siden besteforeldrene hadde vært mer eller mindre pensjonert siden 1973, måtte alt bygges opp igjen på nytt, dessuten var det vanskelig å leve av underkant av to hektar. Flere vinmarker ble kjøpt, de siste i 2011 i appellasjonen Côte de Nuits Villages og vinmarken Les Evocelles i Gevrey. Denis Bachelet er i fast tro på at en god pinot noir blir til i vinmarken, hvor han utfører alle de nødvendige operasjoner som grønn innhøsting, bladkontroll og sortering for å oppnå de aller beste druene.

Vel inne i kjelleren havner druene på et sorteringsbord hvor alle som ikke har optimal modenhet eller har spor av råte blir plukket bort. Alle druene blir avstilket og deretter lagt på eikefat. Hans eneste grand cru Charmes ligger på rundt halvparten nye fat og halvparten brukte fat, mens de andre vinene har en tredjedel nye fat.

Garnet og eldet utviklet farge. Sedertre med mørke solbær med hint av lakris og lær. Pen nese, noe mer skrinn og metallisk i munnen. Bra tanniner fortsatt og strukturen er nogenlunde intakt. Fullmoden som mange 1982 rød Bordeaux er nå. Jeg var på 78/79. Medtatt av Kaare. 92 poeng 

Etna Rosso Vigna Barbagalli 2010, Pietradolce 

Lys leskende Nerello Mascalese, overraskende strukturert med en bitter finish. Lys burgunderaktig munnfølelse. Fragrant, rik og floral med innslag av markjordbær.

Dominus Estate 1985, Napa 

Purpur fremdeles ! Pen promp på nesa. En eldet og perfekt flaske. Første årgangen av Dominus var 1983. Superb balanse, fremdeles mye indre kraft. Elegant sniff av sedetre, og kaffe, men alt er sømløst og deilig. Ikke så ulikt Pomerol ! Viser hvor bra US Napa var på 80-tallet. Ingen typisk "Parker-vin" (Han har gitt den 91 poeng) Litt spesielt at han liker å ha en tegning av seg selv på etiketten men.....Medtatt av Kjell A. 96 p.

Hermitage Monier de La Sizeranne 1989, M. Chapoutier 

Dyrepels, våt hund på nesa. Snill med helt avslepne tanniner. Mørk farge fremdeles. Vandig kant. God balanse, men litt karakterløs nå. Drikk opp. Medtatt av Kim. 93 poeng

Utviklet farge med vandig kant. Overraskende drikkeklar. Drikker optimalt nå. Elegant med innslag av høstløv og modne kirsebær. Medtatt av Thomas. 94 poeng

Gunnar; Middels dyp rød, transparent. Mørke bær og roseblader på duft, servert blindt og ingen tvil om at dette er nebbiolo. En ganske "snill" barolo, sødmefull frukt med lett raspende tanniner. På den elegante siden med lang og harmonisk smakskurve, ganske varm i stilen og helt flott å drikke nå,

Frisk Fourrier, ikke veldig typisk burgund verken på nesa eller i munnen. Søtlig og overmoden i munnen med snev av vanilje. Ikke en typisk grønn 2011. Gunnars vin.

Chateau Lynch Bages 1986, Pauillac
Fremdeles lilla kjerne med vandig kant. Sedertre, tørr stil og en klassisk Pauillac. Dype intense solbær med syrlig frisk finish. Tørrer endel i munnen etterhvert. Bør nok drikkes. 92 poeng.

Gunnar W var enig (!) ; Solbær, skogsbær, rosmarin og et svakt urtepreg på duft. Sval, flott frukt, god konsentrasjon. Ganske massiv vin med varm frukt og et krydret preg. Finkornete, men tydelige tanniner. Litt røff og rustikk (92 pts.)




Chateau Pichon Comtesse de Lalande 1986, Pauillac
Noe grønt og rustikt, overraskende solid for slottets feminine uttrykk. Jeg har hatt denne flere ganger tidligere og først nå kommer den i "window of drinkability". Lettere trykk enn tidligere, elegant og mer typisk for slottet. Men det tok 30 år ! Saltaktig, delikat og kan lagres. Men fortsatt ikke en ultratypisk Pichon Lalande. 93 poeng

May-Eliane de Lencquesaing sold Pichon Lalande to the owners of Roederer Champagne in January 2007. This family-run company is managed by Frederic Rouzaud and owns several other wine estates in Bordeaux: au Bernadotte, Chateau de Pez, Haut Beausejour and Chateau Reaut la Graviere. Chateau Bernadotte was sold in December 2012.

With the new owners, other changes took place in management. However, the feminine touch was still in place. In February, 2011, Sylvie Cazes was named the director of Chateau Pichon Lalande. She replaced Gildas d’Ollone. Sylvie Cazes was replaced in 2012 by Nicolas Glumineau, who was previously employed at Chateau Montrose in St. Estephe.

Once the purchase for Chateau Pichon Lalande was concluded, in 2008, a complete renovation of the estate took place. The wine making facilities were rebuilt and modernized. The new construction of course included work in the cellars, vat rooms and chais.

The reception area, glass museum and chateau was remodeled. A targeted, replanting program for select, vineyard parcels was started. The replanting focused on making sure the best root stocks with the most potential were planted in the correct, specific soil types for each grape varietal.

In 2012, Chateau Pichon Comtesse de Lalande once again renovated the estate with a budget estimated to be in excess of 15 Million Euros. Designed by the noted Architects Philippe Ducos and Alexandre Rougier. This renovation provided numerous improvements in their wine making and vineyard management techniques.

Most importantly, to help in the vinification, they created a new, triple tiered, cellar where everything moves by gravity. They also added numerous new, stainless steel, temperature controlled, double skinned vats. These new vats allow Pichon Lalande to vinify on a parcel by parcel basis as well as help with softer, more gentle extractions for the most sensuous wine of Pauillac.

The new facilities included the building of a new, underground barrel aging cellar and several new buildings.The improvements at the Chateroperty were also completed with goal of being as green and environmentally conscious as possible. In addition, they added the Bucher destemmer and Oscillys machine for sorting along with the Vistalys Optical Sorting technology.

Mørkere uttrykk og igjen endel tørre tøffe tanniner. Men vinen er moden og tilgjengelig i midtpartiet, men mangler endel harmoni og balanse. Blir mutt og stum i finish, og mangler et liten syresnert som avslutning. 91 poeng

Starter med paprika og østsidetoner, blir mer floral i glasset med kaffe, solbær og i en dyp karakterfull Pauillac-stil. En solid og klassisk moderne Bordeaux. Mangler kanskje endel nyanser, den er monollitisk og står som en påle ! Den beste Baron lagd ? Kim var den eneste som tok denne som en Pauillac. 93 poeng

Chateau Magdelaine 1990, St. Emilion
Grønn, undermoden, streng med mye tørrstoffer. Overraskende mye tanniner for en merlotbasert vin. Men den hadde mye friskhet og energi. Ingen tok denne som en St. Emilion vin ! 94 poeng

Moueix, declared that 2011 would be the final vintage for the property.From that point forward, the vineyard of Chateau Magdelaine would be merged into their other estate in the appellation, Chateau Belair-Monange.

Fioler, blomstereng og på den elegante siden i St. Julien. En deilig optimal balansert vin og Are mente dette var den beste Leoville Barton han hadde smakt ! Roar & Øyvind tok denne som en St. Julien vin. 95 poeng

Chateau Montrose 1990, St. Estephe
Eksotisk og dyp nese. Litt brettanomyces, men mer ren rødbærsfrukt enn 1989. Lag-på-lag-vin, krydrede liljer, jordlig, går av seg hesteparfymen etterhvert. Ren og fin flaske etter 1 time, litt uenighet om stall/brett, men alle var enig at det var en fantastisk vin. Alle tok denne som en St. Estephe unntagen Knut. Are og Øistein ga den 98 poeng. 97 poeng.

Chateau Troplong Mondot 1989, St. Emilion
Noe av problemet i 1989 i Bordeaux var at det var veldig varmt, druene ble høstet inn rekordtidlig og flere viner viser uintegrerte og ikke fullmodne tanniner. Flere trodde dette var en vestside, kun Kim tok den som en St. Emilion. Den hadde fremdeles harde og grønne tanniner. Lys farge tilsier at den nok heller ikke har så mye å gå på. Utviklet og tørker endel på finish. 93 poeng


Chateau Baron Pichon Loungeville 1989, Pauillac
En helt annen munnfølelse enn forrige vin. Rik, solid frukt, antydning til brett, kork & jord. Gode smeltende tanniner, noe kaffe og klassisk sigarkasse. Vinen kan fremdeles lagres. Roar, Knut & Kim tok denne som en Pauillac. 94 poeng.


Chateau Montrose 1989, St. Estephe
Mørk og dyp vin. Igjen ble det endel diskusjon om brett og uren nese. 50% av flaskene vi har drukket av 1989 & 1990 fra dette slottet har brettomyces. Men vinen er superkompleks og harmonisk. I rekka skilte den seg klart ut som den mest sexy og sødmefulle vinen. Men ikke så bra som 1990. Alle tok denne som St. Estephe unntagen Øistein. 92 poeng

Chateau Leoville Barton 1989, St. Julien
Den "letteste" vinen i flighten. En mer tydelig rødbærsfrukt, elegant med sedertre, lett på tå, men vinen holder seg fremdeles frisk og god. På den pene lyse siden og jeg tror ikke den blir noe spesielt bedre ved ytterligere lagring. Men for et superkjøp dette var på VP på 90 - tallet ! Jon og Kim tok denne som en St. Julien. 93 poeng.

Are serverte denne i vinmøte februar 2016; 
Chateau Leoville Barton 1989, Saint-Julien; Klassisk rød bordeaux, floral, frisk med et slør av sødme. Kim mente dette ikke var bordeaux. Tørr med god syre, litt undermoden for årgangen. 94 poeng.

1989 Bordeaux wine remains a unique vintage.  The 1989 Bordeaux vintage got off to an auspicious start with a wet spring, following the very, mild winter conditions. Things rapidly improved.  By May, the vines were close to three weeks ahead of schedule. Flowering was early and even. The summer was hot, sunny and dry. In fact, it was the hottest summer on record in ages. You had to go all the back to 1949, to find equally hot temperatures. In fact, since records were kept, only 1947 recorded hotter temperatures during the summer months. With a harvest start date of August 31, 1989 Bordeaux is the product of one of the earliest harvests in history. You need to travel back to 1893 to find a year where the picking of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon commenced as early as August 18! The length of time allotted to pick also set a record.  While most chateaux finished picking by late September, a few growers did not complete their harvest until October 15!  There was a lot of wine too. It was a large harvest for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes.

1989 Bordeaux wine provided numerous examples of stellar Bordeaux. But with the notable exception of Chateau Haut Brion, it is a year where the best 1989 Bordeaux wine was not made by the First Growths. 1989 Bordeaux wine is in large shaped by the fact that the Merlot was favored over Cabernet Sauvignon. The reason for that is, numerous Left Bank chateaux harvested their Cabernet Sauvignon before the grapes had the chance to reach full maturity. The Merlot set a record for alcohol levels at that time, reaching between 13.5% to almost 15% for some vats! That  level of ripeness and alcohol was unequaled in those days.

I have to confess that I was looking forward to reevaluating the 1989s more than the 1999s, in no small part because the reputation of the 1989s has always been in a state of flux, never quite reaching consensus. Coming off the back of the well-received 1988, and with stocks of 1985 and 1986 floating about, the 1989s met a rapturous reception that was immediately questioned and labeled as merchant hyperbole. There was a bit of overexcited rhetoric, but more importantly, it is a vintage that does not conform to the Bordeaux hierarchy, being populated by more under- and over-performers than usual. Nineteen eighty-nine is a “cosplay” vintage insofar as a handful of properties dressed up as First Growths, acted like First Growths and, most importantly, taste like First Growths. Let’s name names.

From my forays into attaching words to wine, I put my neck out and averred that the 1989 Pichon Baron and 1989 Lynch Bages were equal to, if not better than, the First Growths. Upon reaching their 30-year milestones, I find no reason to alter that view; both remain high points on the Left Bank, probably because to varying degrees, Jean-Michel Cazes is behind both. I tasted the 1989 with the great man himself, and he remarked that it remains one of his greatest successes at Lynch-Bages, though he regrets how few bottles remain at the property. Or there is the stunning 1989 Montrose. I have encountered this wine dozens of times and it can reach perfection. My last bottle at the 1989 dinner at Hatched did not quite achieve that, though it remains a remarkable Saint-Estèphe. Far and away the finest Montrose of that decade, it is cut from a very different cloth than the 1990, albeit with less preponderance of Brettanomyces, depending upon what bottle you have. Likewise, Château Palmer produced a wine that is within touching distance of the 1983, quintessentially Margaux thanks to its floral nose and as vigorous today as when I first tasted it 20 years ago.

How do these overachievers compare to the First Growth at age 30? Well, they are mostly better. Their reputations were tarnished by criticism meted out by Robert Parker that prevailed throughout the 1990s and stuck with them. Though we disagree on some matters, here he was correct. For example, when tasting blind the 1988, 1989 and 1990 Lafite-Rothschild at the property last year, I much preferred the less-fashionable 1988. The 1989 Mouton-Rothschild is decent, though it pales in comparison to recent vintages under Philippe Dhalluin and does display some variation. Likewise, there was nothing wrong with the 1989 Latour... unless you serve it beside the likes of Lynch-Bages or even the commendable 1989 Les Forts de Latour, still chugging along nicely at 30 years old.

Rik, tett og en moderne vin. Opulent og tettvevet struktur. Jeg trodde denne var yngre. Men i glasset etterhvert noe sursøt og tørrer endel på finish. En solmoden og deilig vin. Men jeg synes kanskje den var litt bedre før ? 92-93 poeng

Lys i farge, lyse bær på nesa, deilig parfymert "1985" nese. En moden og klassisk flaske Bordeaux med innslag av fioler, "lett på tå" og nesten burgunderaktig i stilen. Bra syre, vi var litt uenig om vanndighet. Men bør nok drikkes snart. 93-94 poeng

Mørk mokka, lett i munnen, noen uharmonisk syrestikk. Metallisk i finish og har mistet endel frukt. Sjelden man drikker gode flasker fra dette slottet. 90 poeng


Chateau Calon Segur 1947, St. Estephe
Pen farge fremdeles med vandig kant. Litt uklar, vinen ble ikke dekantert. Tørket frukt på nesa, sursøt i munnen, kaffe og en viss energi er der fremdeles. Jeg gjettet Bordeaux 1975. Rustikk, tørrer mye på finish, jernoksid, vandig og skulle vært drukket tidligere. Drikk opp. Flere hadde denne i magnum for noen år siden og det var da en betydelig bedre vin. Spesielt var det «47-sødmen» som manglet nå. 91-93 poeng.

Historic records show that Calon Segur was in existence as far back as 1147, when it was owned by Monseigneur de Calon. He was an important Bishop in the community. This makes Chateau Calon Segur a contender for the oldest property in Saint Estephe. Eventually the Medoc property came to be owned by Nicolas Alexandre de Segur. Which as you can see is where the name, Calon Segur comes from. After passing through generations, the estate became the property of the famous Marquis de Segur. de Segur is an important figure in Bordeaux history, not only for his ownership of numerous top Bordeaux estates of the day, (he also owned Lafite and Latour) but de Segur is credited with uttering the words that spawned the idea behind the heart shaped logo of Calon Segur. Legend has it, de Segur is quoted as saying: “I make my wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is in Calon.” That famous saying lives forever on the label of Chateau Calon Segur, where the drawing of a heart is prominently featured on the logo.

Chateau Calon Segur was one of the original three Bordeaux vineyards in Saint Estephe. In 1825 Chateau Montrose was a forest parcel belonging to the Calon Segur estate. In fact, Phelan Segur was also once part of the vast Segur estate. The holdings of the powerful Segur family were so large, they included not only what later became Lafite Rothschild, but also Latour and Mouton Rothschild!

Chateau Calon Segur, The Modern Age

The first part of the modern era for Chateau Calon Segur begins in 1894 when its Left Bank vineyards were purchased by Georges Gasqueton and Charles Hanappier. The Gasqueton family managed the estate until 2012. Most recently, the figurehead of Calon Segur was the charming, albeit eccentric, Madame Denise Gasqueton. Madame Gasqueton ran the estate while marching to the beat of her own drummer until she passed away at the age of 87 in late September, 2011.

The following year, July 2012, Chateau Calon Segur was sold for 170 million Euros, which at the current exchange rate, comes close to 215 million dollars. The buyer is the large French Insurance Company, Suravenir Insurance. Jean-Pierre Moueix, the owner of Petrus and the massive negociant company Duclot, took a minority stake in Chateau Calon Segur.

Since the new owners took over Calon Segur, they started a serious program of renovating the property with a focus on the wine making facilities. Following the trend to vinify on a parcel by parcel basis, the estate replaced their older vats with new, stainless steel tanks that vary in size and number to match all the various parcels in the large vineyard. The new tanks accompany a completely new vat room as well with everything moving completely by gravity. The new tasting room features a skylight giving it a more spacious feel, along with much better light. The renovations were completed in 2016.

More than work in the cellars was needed here. Immediately after the sale was closed, the new owners began an extensive replanting of the Calon Segur vineyard. There are numerous reasons the new owners chose to do this. They needed to increase the level of vine density and add more Cabernet Sauvignon in the vineyard. The extensive renovation of Chateau Calon Segur is expected to cost at least 20 Million Euros. One of the other changes that took place when the new owners took control was bringing in Vincent Millet as the Technical Director.

Chateau Calon Segur Vineyards, Grapes, Terroir, Winemaking

The large, 55 hectare St. Estephe Bordeaux vineyard of Calon Segur is planted to 53% Cabernet Sauvignon 38% Merlot 7% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. This shows a slight change, with a small reduction in the Cabernet Sauvignon and an increase in the Merlot. The vine density varies, but it is not as full as most vineyards in the Medoc. In fact as many as 20 hectares were in such poor condition when the property as sold in 2012, they were planted to as low as 5,900 vines per hectare. The average vine density is close to 8,000 vines per hectare today, the plan is to increase the vine density in all the plots to 10,000 plants per hectare. The goal of the new owners of Calon Segur is to decrease the percentage of the Merlot, reducing it to only 20% of the vineyard and add more Cabernet Sauvignon vines in their place. Historically speaking, this is similar to how the vineyard was planted in previous generations.

Chateau Calon Segur is one of the few walled in vineyards in the Left Bank. Calon Segur is also known as the northern most Classified Growth in Medoc. However, it’s interesting to note that the estate has two small parcels of vines that are located just outside their walled in vineyards. Those parcels are used for the Grand Vin. Much of the vineyard has a view of the Gironde, which adds to their micro-climate. The vineyard is just north of the small village of Saint Estephe. While there are slopes found here, they are slight, ranging from 2 meters up to 23 meters. The peak elevation is close to the small chapel on the property, just east of the chateau. The vineyard is divided into 3 large blocks, each of which has small hills and slopes. The smallest block, is due south of the 2 main vineyards. The 3 main blocks can be further divided into 60 different parcels. The best terroir is placed to the east, close to the chapel, with views of the Gironde.

The terroir of Calon Segur is a blend of gravel, rocks, clay, sand and limestone soils on the surface with gravel that can be as deep as 5 meters. Underneath, you find marl, clay and limestone. On average, the vines are 25 years of age. The young age is due to the replanting program. However, they have old vines, placed close to the small chapel, which range from 45-60 years of age.

The vineyard of Chateau Calon Segur remains almost exactly the same as it did at the time of the 1855 Classification. While the vineyard is large at 55 hectares, most of the time, only 50 hectares of vines are planted. This allows time for the soils to remain fallow and become revitalized. Because the vineyard is situated in the northern most part of the St. Estephe appellation, quite often, Chateau Calon Segur can have one of the coolest terroirs in the northern Medoc. Thus, they can be one of the last properties to finish harvesting, depending on the vintage. Chateau Calon Segur is also one of the most difficult estates to find as there are no signs to lead the way. Trust me on this one, as I got lost the first few times I visited the property. The previous owner was not fond of visitors.

Making the Wine of Calon Segur

To produce the wine of Chateau Calon Segur today, vinification takes place in a gleaming new, facility that was completed in 2016, after a multi year, top to bottom renovation. Now, the fermentation takes place in 70 conical shaped, stainless steel tanks that range in size from 25 hectoliters to 120 hectoliters allowing for very precise, parcel by parcel vinification. Prior to the new owners taking over the estate in 2012, the wine was aged in up to 50% new, French oak barrels for between 12 to 18 months before bottling. Today, the best vintages are now aged in 90% to 100% new, French oak barrels for up to 20 months in an effort to soften the wine while also adding more layers of more richness to the texture. Previously, the percentage of new oak was closer to 60%, on average.

Production of Chateau Calon Segur is on average, close to 20,000 cases of wine per year. There is a second wine, which was previously named Marquis de Calon. The second wine is now sold under the name of Le Marquis de Calon Segur. There is also a third wine, which is sold under 2 names, La Chapelle de Calon, and St. Estephe de Calon Segur, which is produced from vines that for the most part comes from their specific plot with more limestone in the soil. The owners control another estate, a cru bourgeois property, which is also located in the St. Estephe appellation, Capbern Gasqueton.

The best vintages of Calon Segur are: 2016, 2015, 2014, 2010, 2009, 2005, 2003, 2000, 1990, 1982, 1953, 1949, 1947, 1945, 1929 and 1928. As you can see by all the older vintages on my list, the wine of Chateau Calon Segur evolves and ages extremely well. Chateau Calon Segur is a powerful, tannic wine that in the best vintages requires more than a decade, and often 2 decades to soften and come together.

Style and Character of Calon Segur Wine

The style of Calon Segur wine until the new owners took over were masculine, sturdy, tannic, structured and traditional in its textures with a lean to a brawny of St. Estephe wine that often took more than decade or two, or longer to become civilized. Starting with the 2014 vintage, the wines have taken on a new style. Under the direction of Laurent Dufau, the wines of Calon Segur and Capbern Gasqueton are softer, lusher, riper, more forward and refined in their approach with a better purity of fruit that in my view, are dramatically better.

Red 2001 Bordeaux

2001 årgangen i rød Bordeaux har holdt seg godt, Den har jo havnet fullstendig i skyggen av Sauternes 2001 som er fantastisk. Samtidig kom den etter en sagnomsust årgang 2000 og etterfulgt av "rare" årganger som 2002 og 2003. Regn i september bidro til botrytis, men resulterte samtidig til endel grønn og umoden Cabernet Franc og Cabernet Sauvignon. Således har den litt mindre tanniner og jeg synes alltid den har vært elegant og mindre rustikk enn f.eks. 2004, samtidig som 2004 kanskje har litt mer frukt og trøkk. Overraskende at årgangen holder seg såpass godt synes jeg, det var bare en flaske som var drikkemoden. Det som vel er best med årgangen er ar den fremdeles kan kjøpes for en rimelig penge. Og den drikker godt i minimum 5 år til.

Elegansen viste seg godt fram i  Chateau Pichon Baron Longueville 2001  Raffinert og frisk, floral, minty med touch av anis. Ny eik fornemmes fortsatt, men vinen er livlig og solid. 92-94 poeng

Chateau Pontet Canet 2001 var stram og endel metallisk. Tørr og grov i munnen, umodne tanniner, syrlig, hard og trå. Snev av deig og gjær. Mye solbær og denne mangler mye. Jeg synes mange eldre Pontet Canet har disse egenskapene. 88-90 poeng

Chateau Conseillante 2001 viser tydelig pomerol-karakteristika, god friskhet og lett i munnen. Blomster med solmoden frukt. Men ingen stor Conseillante. 90-92 poeng

Chateau Haut Bailly 2001 har endel varm frukt med rosin. Samtidig endel grønt og usikker på om dette er en optimal flaske. Flere var på østside. Bløt frukt samtidig litt undermodent og grønt. Synes ofte Haut Bailly har denne friskheten, men mangler full harmoni. Denne varme frukttonen gjør den eksotisk, men fremdeles med tanniner. 92 poeng

Chateu Brane Cantenac 2001 var en imponerende outsider i denne flighten. Mer moden med rosin, samtidig et kjølig og pent fruktbilde. Flere var på Margaux. Floral og konsentrert. Virker som en eldre vin og denne drikker optimalt nå.  93-94 poeng

Rød Bordeaux 1990

Smakingen viste at 1990 er en solid årgang i rød Bordeaux der flere slott lagde fremragende viner. Selv om vi ikke smakte storheter som Chateau Lafite 1990, Chateau Margaux 1990 og Montrose 1990, viste smakingen at mindre slott som Grand Puy Lacoste og Haut Bailly lagde sine kanskje største viner hittil dette året. Og at Pichon Baron "overpresterte" med en tyktflytende , fet og tannrik juice. Årgangen har nok spesielt vært vellykket for Chateau Palmer, som "glemte" litt sin feminine elegante side. På Palmer vertikalsmakingen 7.5.13 mente de fleste at den litt utypiske 1990 var best. Og vi hadde 1959, 1961, 1966 og 1983 også ! Men mindre slott kan drikkes nå, noen slott prøvde litt for hardt og det var betydelig forskjell mellom de gode og de dårlige vinene. 2ndre cru`ene + Palmer, GPL og Haut Bailly holdt seg, resten bør vurderes mht. korkspretting.

Chateau Clerc Milon 1990, Pauillac

Lys rød farge og lett  Haut Medoc-aktig munnfølelse. Frisk, ren og elegant. Litt volatil med antydning til syrestikk. Tørr rødbærsfrukt. 90 poeng

Chateau Chasse-Spleen 1990, Moulis

Mørkere frukt, noe sursøt med lakris og fremdeles gode tanniner. Litt eksotisk og rik nese. Men ubalansert og ikke god i munnen. 88 poeng

Chateau Haut Bailly 1990, Pessac-Leognan

Medium purpur rød  kjerne med mursteinrød kant. Sursøt, frisk, krydder, kompleks. Pauillac-aktig. Solid frukt med elegant nese. Klar og tydelig. 92 poeng

Are; Klar, middels dyp, utviklet i kantene.Nesa: God intensitet, fokusert, utviklet, moden, men kjølig frukt, aromaer av modne mørke bær, med undertoner av modne røde bær, floral, balsamisk, krydret, salmiakk lakris, appelsinskall, underskog, te/tobakk, urtepreget, fin kompleksitet på nesa med fine overtoner og undertoner, nyansert. Munnen: Fylde 9, fast god elegant munnfølelse med smak av modne mørke og røde bær, snerper endel, men god tanninkvalitet, snerp 9, tiltalende friskhet som gir vinen livlighet, fin intensitet, konsentrert, lang ettersmak av moden mørke og røde bær, kryddertoner, urter, anis preg, Utviklet vin fin dybde i frukten. Vinen er fokusert i munnen og har en elegant munnfølelse. Drikker fint nå, men kan enda lagres mange år.

Chateau Batailley 1990, Pauillac

Lett volatil nese. Men samtidig mokka og relativ typisk Pauillac med sigar, sedertre og kaffetoner. Mere krydder, melkeaktig og tyngre i smak. Men mister årgangens trøkk. Drikk opp. 85-89 poeng

Chateau La Lagune 1990, Haut Medoc

Dyp og mørk farge fremdeles og flere trodde dette var Pauillac. Tydelige solbær, underskog og en elegant munnfølelse. Sursøt frukt og bløt struktur. Clerc Milon ? 90 poeng

Chateau Pichon Baron 1990, Pauillac

Overraskende lys og lett i munnen. Solmoden med tydelig alkohol. 1% for mye ? Endel fat. kaffetoner og sedertre. Kraftfull og i en litt vanskelig fase nå ? Men et betydelig hakk opp i kvalitet i forhold til de tidligere viner. 91-95 poeng.

A remarkable vintage for Pichon Longueville Baron, 1990 is one of this estate's two or three finest wines made in the last 40 years. Still inky/blue/purple-tinged to the rim, it reveals an extraordinary bouquet of charcoal, incense, creme de cassis, blue and black fruits, and a hint of licorice as well as an impressively long finish. While drinkable, its evolution is extremely slow, and I would not be surprised to see it last another two decades or more

Kjøttkraft og Bag in Box i nesa. Dyp, varm og rik nese. Kraftig med mye smak. Prøver litt mye med fremdeles kraftige tanniner. Uforløst med mokkatoner. Flere tok denne som Lynch Bages. Enten liker eller ikke liker man slike viner. 88-93 poeng

Chateau Palmer 1990, Margaux

Kraftfull og atypisk Margaux. Bra syre, frisk og god i munnen. Fremdeles mye tanniner. Tydelig solbær og en "amerikansk" Margaux-stil. Men har den typiske elegante stilen fremdeles, selv om den nok er litt annerledes enn man kan forvente. Dette var den beste Bordeaux 1990 ! Roar ga denne 97 poeng. Fellesscore; 94 poeng. Kim kjøpte denne primeur i London i 1991. Vinen fikk en relativ lav vurdering tidlig, men dette er en vin som blir bedre og bedre !

Sweet, open nose with some evolution and a subtle herbiness. Perfumed and very soft. Classic, sweet, seamless and earthy. The palate is open, smooth, complex and evolved with a lovely sweet earthiness. This is just drinking perfectly now, with weight and subtlety. Thrilling wine of great precision and poise. 96/100 (Blend: 37% Merlot, 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot)

Bright ruby, garnet rim. Leather, cedar, floral, very subdued and elegant nose, layered and a bit light on it's feet, gorgeous nose. Slightly heavier with air. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, elegant and leaner body, still quite intense, leather, tobacco and still a slight tannic grip in the finish. Long. 94+

1988 Château Palmer:

Lower neck fill. Bright ruby, garnet rim. Some floral notes over figs, anise, plums and blueberries. Slightly herbal and scented. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, playful and elegant, mouthwatering, long, but drops off suddenly.  91+

1986 Château Palmer:

Top shoulder fill. Bright ruby, very thin brick rim. Deeper nose, some plums, cherries, scented and intense nose. Layered and complex. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity and lively, quite playful and refreshing, towards mouthwatering, very long. But looses something with air. Becomes shorter. 95

1985 Château Palmer:

Bottom neck fill. Bright ruby, thin brick rim. Intense and scented nose, floral and layered, cassis and leather, lovely nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity and lively, lovely fruit and texture, very elegant but a little bit short. 93

Berry Bros & Rudd label, estate bottled, dark green BBR foil. Cork confirms label. Bottom neck fill. Bright garnet, brick rim. Scented and floral, lean and very mature nose. A touch of VA that blows off. Sweet and sour. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, lean and drying, somewhat fruitier with air. 85

1967 Château Palmer:

Top shoulder fill. Garnet, brick rim, slightly cloudy. Cherries, liquorice and sweet and sour. Fresh acidity, few tannins, a bit lean and dry, lacks fruit. 82

1966 Château Palmer:

Berry Bros & Rudd bottled, darker red foil, lower neck fill. Cork states Berry Bros Rudd LTD London. Bright garnet, brick rim. Beautiful floral, cherries and red berries nose. Scented, layered and nuanced. Gorgeous nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity and lively, very elegant, quite refined, playful, slightly drying finish, but very refreshing and more so with air. 93

1961 Château Palmer:

Berry Bros & Rudd bottled, golden foil, mid-shoulder fill. Cork reads Berry Bros Rudd LTD London Château Palmer Margaux 1961. Slightly cloudy garnet with almost orange rim. Scented, slightly floral, red berries and cherries, figs, leather and prunes, dried tobacco. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity and lively but drying finish, quite full bodied first, lean finish. Ads with air, getting fuller and longer. 92

1959 Château Palmer:

L'Acheteur negociant bottling.  Top shoulder fill. Cork stated nothing. Bright garnet, brick rim. Scented, liquorice, floral and a touch of mint on the nose. Red berries. Fresh acidity, drying palate, dusty and unpleasant, dry finish. Again it ads with air, getting more body. 86

Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste 1990, Pauillac

Mørk, kaffe med bittertoner. Denne vinen har alltid vært kraftfull og tanninrik. Og kjent for kanskje å være den beste GPL som er laget. Konsentrert juice, fremdeles tydelige tanniner og bør fremdeles lagres. Vi gjettet på GPL eller Pichon Baron. Broadbent er særdeles imponert av denne og spesielt da strukturen *(****) ! 90-95 poeng.

1990 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

1. Tobacco, cigar box, earth, cassis, blackberry and forest floor scents are all over the place. Concentrated, powerful, and stuffed with ripe, chewy cassis, this classic, Pauillac wine is still young and will continue getting better for the next few decades. 2. Truffles, tobacco, blackberry, cassis, earth, molasses and forest floor scents make up the complex perfume. Ful bodied and intense, this young wine is stuffed with ripe cassis, smoke and fresh black cherry. 3. 90 Grand Puy Lacoste expresses truffle, cassis, tobacco, cedar, leather and forest floor scents. Still young, this powerful, concentrated, masculine wine offers a big, beefy, juicy mouthful of ripe cabernet fruit. Some tannin remains that needs to be resolved. The wine finishes with cassis and a of hint green pepper which detracted from the otherwise sublime experience. I've had other bottles that did not display green notes that earned a higher score. 4. Truffles, soy, smoke, tobacco, dark plums and jammy berries with forest scents pop up the moment the cork leaves the bottle, gaining in intensity as the wine slams into the glass. 5. I don't care how cheap it used to be. Those days are gone and even at today's prices, for a wine of this quality, it's worth the bucks. To me, when you get down to it, that is the best descriptor you can read. Would you buy more? I would. The rich, ripe, beautiful cassis laden wine is incredibly concentrated. Big, and broad shouldered, this is very well balanced and while not yet fully mature, can be enjoyed today. If you have only a few bottles, you can wait. It's not going anywhere.    Chateau Leoville Barton 1990, St. Julien

Mørk, solbær med mye kraft. Fremdeles endel tanniner, men i et betydelig lettere format enn Pichon Baron & Puy Lacoste. Parfymert og litt overmoden i stilen. Ingen god munnfølelse og 1% for mye alkohol. Svir litt i munnen. Men samtidig litt uforløst og kan nok ligge fremdeles. Usikker.framtid.Broadbent påpeker også at denne er variabel.  91 poeng.

Red Wine of the Year 2011; Klar, intens og mørk Bordeaux som holder fargen helt ut. "Omph" i nesa,  rik og elegant på samme tid. Litt uenighet om dette var en "Parkerized" vin. Kompleks og lang ettersmak, lag på lag, litt 1990 Montrose-aktig soliditet.. 95 poeng. Øyvind tok med denne.

Vinmøte hos Kim 6.5.10: Kaffe, sedertre og solbær. Litt vandig, men elegant. Ganske muted i farge, med skjær av purpur. Litt lukket i stilen nå med whiff av alkohol. Stram og bør fremdeles lagres. Men det virker ikke som den har kraft igjen. 89 poeng
